Zero-Click Search: Strategies for Getting Visibility When Clicks Are Declining

SparkToro published research in June 2026, using Similarweb clickstream data, showing that 68% of US Google searches between January and April ended without a click to any website.
Put differently: out of every 1,000 searches, only around 276 reached the open web.
That number has climbed steadily. 50% in 2019. 60% in 2024. 68% now. This isn’t a sudden AI-driven collapse, it’s a decade-long structural shift that AI Overviews accelerated rather than caused.
The reasonable response to that is not panic. It’s understanding which parts of your search demand are actually affected, because the impact is nowhere near evenly distributed.
Where the Clicks Actually Went
The headline figure hides enormous variation, and the variation is where the strategy lives.
Informational queries are around 74% zero-click. Transactional queries are around 31%. Someone asking what a commercial registration is gets their answer on the page. Someone searching for a company formation consultant in Doha still clicks.
Mobile is around 77% zero-click. Desktop is around 46.5%. The gap is substantial, and it matters for businesses whose audience skews heavily mobile, which in Qatar is most of them.
When AI Overviews appear, zero-click rises to roughly 83%. Without them it sits closer to 60%. AI Overviews now show on somewhere between 20% and 26% of searches depending on which study you read.
And critically, Rand Fishkin’s own summary of the data points out that branded searches, local business queries, and high-intent transactional searches continue to benefit significantly from SEO.
That last point deserves more attention than it usually gets, particularly here.
Why This Is Less Bad for Qatar Businesses Than the Headline Suggests
Look at what most Qatar SMEs actually depend on for search-driven business.
“Company formation consultant Doha.” “Best travel agency in Qatar.” “Corporate lawyer near me.” “Office fit out Qatar.” These are local, commercial, high-intent queries. They’re precisely the category that still produces clicks, because the searcher needs a provider, not a definition.
The queries getting absorbed into AI Overviews and featured snippets are the informational ones sitting at the top of the funnel. “What is a commercial registration.” “How does Schengen visa processing work.” “What is performance marketing.”
Both matter, but they matter differently now. And a business that understood its content mix as one undifferentiated thing called “SEO” will struggle to see that, while a business that separates them can plan around it.
One caveat worth stating: the 68% figure is US clickstream data. Qatar-specific zero-click rates aren’t published at that granularity, and the local search landscape here, thinner competition, significant Arabic-language search, high mobile share, may behave somewhat differently. The direction of travel is clearly the same. The exact numbers shouldn’t be treated as local.
The Measurement Problem Nobody Wants to Deal With
Here’s the uncomfortable part. If two-thirds of searches don’t produce a click, then traffic as your primary SEO metric is measuring a shrinking slice of your actual visibility.
A business whose organic sessions declined 20% year on year might be losing ground. Or its content might be getting surfaced more than ever in answers that never generate a session. Traffic alone cannot distinguish between those two situations, and they call for opposite responses.
What to track instead, or alongside:
Impressions in Search Console, separated from clicks. Rising impressions with flat clicks is not failure. It’s zero-click visibility, and it needs to be read as such.
Branded search volume. This is the most useful proxy available. If your content is being cited in AI Overviews and featured snippets, people encounter your name without clicking, and a portion of them later search for you directly. Branded search rising while organic clicks stay flat means the visibility is converting into awareness. Branded search flat while impressions climb means you’re visible but not memorable, which is a content quality problem rather than a distribution one.
Citation presence. Whether your business appears in AI Overviews, featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, and knowledge panels for the queries that matter in your category. This requires actually checking rather than inferring from analytics.
Conversion rate on the traffic that does arrive. Multiple studies indicate that clicks surviving an AI Overview convert better, because the visitor has already read a summary and is seeking depth. Fewer, better-qualified visitors is a different business outcome than fewer visitors.
What Actually Works Now
Win the surfaces rather than fighting them. Featured snippets, People Also Ask, knowledge panels and AI citations are placements. Being in them delivers brand impressions whether or not anyone clicks. Structure content so a specific question gets a complete, self-contained answer in the first few sentences of a section, because that’s the format these features extract.
Implement structured data properly. Schema markup, FAQ schema, organisation and local business markup. It doesn’t manufacture citations out of weak content, but it removes friction for content that’s already strong and increases eligibility for rich results.
Prioritise the queries that still click. If transactional queries convert at three times the rate of informational ones in a zero-click environment, that’s where the commercial content investment belongs. Informational content still matters for authority and citation presence, but it shouldn’t be measured on traffic.
Get the Google Business Profile right. Local business queries are among the most click-resilient categories, and in Qatar the local pack is disproportionately valuable given how much commercial search here is location-anchored. An inactive or incomplete profile forfeits one of the few surfaces still reliably sending traffic.
Build presence off your own site. In a zero-click environment, appearing in third-party content, industry publications, directories, and platforms your audience uses is visibility that doesn’t depend on someone reaching your domain. YouTube, Reddit and Wikipedia are heavily cited by AI systems, which tells you something about where authority signals come from now.
Treat Arabic search as underexploited. Arabic-language commercial queries in Qatar face far less competition than their English equivalents, and there’s proportionally less Arabic content competing for citation in AI answers. That gap is closing, but it’s currently open.
The Strategic Reframe
The useful mental model is that the SERP has become the placement rather than the route to the placement.
A billboard doesn’t send anyone to your website either, and nobody measures billboard performance in clicks. Being the answer in a featured snippet or an AI Overview is closer to that than it is to traditional organic search, and evaluating it against click-based KPIs will consistently make good performance look like failure.
That doesn’t mean clicks stopped mattering. Branded, local and transactional queries still drive real traffic and real revenue, and they should be optimised aggressively for exactly that. It means the two categories need separating and measuring differently.
Bragyst works with businesses in Qatar on search strategy built for how the results page actually behaves in 2026, including which queries still merit click-focused optimisation and which should be measured on visibility instead.
If organic traffic is declining and it isn’t clear whether that’s a problem or a measurement artefact, that’s the right place to start.
